Check an American Airlines Gift Card Balance
Look up remaining airfare credit with the 19-digit card number, 4-digit PIN, and the required captcha — or call the gift-card desk if the site will not load.
How to check the balance online
- Open the American Airlines checker. Use giftcards.aa.com/checkBalanceCustomer. That page is the official customer tool — aa.com/giftcards also points here.
- Enter the 19-digit card number with no spaces or dashes. Virtual cards show the number in the delivery email; plastic cards print it on the back.
- Enter the 4-digit PIN. Gently scratch the security panel on a physical card. If you received a virtual card, copy the PIN from the email exactly as shown.
- Solve the captcha, then submit. American Airlines requires reCAPTCHA before it will return the remaining USD balance. If the challenge fails, refresh once and try again, or call 1-800-677-9555.
Checkout Saver does not collect your card number on this page. The official checker runs on American Airlines’ site.
When to call instead of using the website
Call 1-800-677-9555 if the checker will not accept a valid number and PIN, the captcha loops, you need a replacement for a damaged card, or you are confirming that a card was activated. Agents work weekdays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central Time. After hours, email GiftCards@aa.com.
Keep the 19-digit number handy. Agents cannot look up a card from a photo of the airplane artwork alone.
What an American Airlines gift card can (and cannot) pay
These cards are stored-value airfare credit, not AAdvantage miles. They apply to the base fare plus the taxes and fees collected as part of the fare on itineraries sold and originating in the U.S., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Where they work
- Online at aa.com, or by calling reservations at 1-800-433-7300 (a separate ticketing charge may apply on phone bookings).
- Flights marketed by American Airlines, including American Eagle and oneworld partners that carry an American Airlines flight number.
- Up to eight gift cards in one purchase. Leftover value stays on the card until it is used down to zero.
Where they do not work
- Bag fees, pet fees, unaccompanied-minor fees, seat upgrades, Admirals Club, in-flight purchases, or AAdvantage award taxes.
- American Airlines Vacations packages, or as a reloadable debit product. Cards cannot be reloaded after the original purchase.
Official cards are sold in amounts from $50 to $1,500. They do not expire and have no monthly fees. Virtual cards activate about 72 hours after purchase; plastic cards typically ship in 4–5 business days.
Gift cards are not AAdvantage miles
AAdvantage miles live in a member account and follow American’s mileage rules. A gift card is a 19-digit stored-value instrument with a PIN. If you are trying to check remaining flight credit on a gift card, use the checker or phone number above. If you are looking at a mileage balance, sign in to your AAdvantage account instead — that is a different product.
Sell unused credit, or buy a discounted card
If you will not book American, you can sell an American Airlines gift card to Checkout Saver after you verify the live balance. Shoppers looking for a fare can buy discounted American Airlines gift cards when inventory is listed.
Balance figures and program rules can change. Confirm remaining value on American’s site or by phone before you book or list a card.
